Gulf Coast Overhead Doors

Have a(n) <<industry>>-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

  • How do I know if my current door is impact rated

A: There will be a sticker attached to the inside of your door with a positive and negative PFS number and up to a seven-digit Florida Product Approval number. Example: +30/-30 Impact Rated: 12345.56

  • Can you make my existing door impact rated?

A: While we can add hardware to your existing garage door, we do not recommend that. It will not bring your door up to the current FL Building code, not be recognized as an impact rated door by insurance companies, wind mitigators, local county requirements, etc.

  • My garage door is very noisy; do I need to replace it?

A: No, you do not necessarily need a new garage door. Your garage door opener (motor) could be the source of most of the noise. However, service to the existing door is recommended where most of the moving parts can be replaced/upgraded and lubricated.

  • What lubricant should I use on my garage door?

We recommend a lithium-based lubricant, preferably a no-drip. This ensures it stays where its sprayed and does not drip on your garage floor or vehicle.

  • How do I know if my springs are good or need to be tightened?

A: A thorough inspection is recommended by an experienced technician. Springs on garage doors can be dangers and cause severe injury. HOMEOWNERS/BUILDING OCCOUPANTS SHOULD NEVER ATTEMPT TO ADJUST, REMOVE OR REPAIR ANY DOOR. DOORS ARE LARGE HEAVY OBJECTS WITH A LOT OF MOVING PARTS UNDER EXTREME SPRING AND CABLE TENSION.

  • Does a replacement garage door require a county permit?

A: YES! We follow all county and FL Building Code requirements. This is to ensure you receive an impact rated garage door that is compliant to the current code. Any contractor that does not obtain a permit or asks the homeowner to obtain it, is most likely not licensed with the county/state or insured. This can result in serious fines and/or insufficient products or services that do not meet or building code or windload requirements.

  • Do I have to apply for the permit for my new garage door.

A: No. Gulf Coast Overhead Doors takes care of the whole permitting process for you from applying to scheduling the inspection. The homeowner is only responsible for receiving the county inspector for access to the inside of the garage where they can perform their final inspection to close out the permit.

  • Can you install a ‘regular’ non-impact rated/windload garage door?

A: No. We must comply with the building code requirements.

  • 9) Q: Is my new garage door steel or aluminum?

A: ‘Typical’ garage doors are steel. We do offer a series of doors that are aluminum. They are rust/corrosion resistant and very popular in our area, especially on the coast.

  • 10) Q: My opener is very loud, do they make quiet ones?

A: Yes, we carry a line of one of the quietest openers on the market. They are available in many sizes and have many options such as LED lighting, battery back-up, and WiFi connectivity.
